More GPS fun-- the new Garmin eTrex should be out soon. Hmmm. I'll have to look into the data cable issue for this one-- NMEA format? Apparently so:"RS232 with NMEA 0183, RTCM 104 DGPS data format and proprietary GARMIN".

Notes for self-- thinking that perhaps either the GARMIN: GPS 35 TracPak Series might be good for external GPS, and let me plug it into my Handspring or Palm. For a dedicated APRS unit, I could use the Garmin GPS 25 with a TAPR Interface Board Semi-Kit and TAPR Differential GPS Reference Station.
The docs on the latter say it relies on the Motorola Oncore VP, discontinued, but it specified RTCM SC-104 differential correction data, which the Garmin GPS 25 also supplies out the alternate non-NMEA port. Hmm. I wish the folks at TAPR would update the pages, since it's unclear to me whether the diff-g station is even needed now that selective availability is turned off. I don't know much about GPS, so I'll have to research that.

Another project that has been on the back burner for, well, let's just say a long time, is to get my old Palm classic running pocketAPRS for a nice portable, "toss in the car and go" APRS rig.
Of course, the true state of the art in this area has got to be the stuff that's been improved upon for over half a decade by the volunteers who do the Baker to Vegas APRS package. Very, very cool.
